Background of the Study

The integrity of examination systems in higher education is crucial for ensuring fair assessments and maintaining academic standards. Traditional examination proctoring methods, especially in large institutions, often face challenges related to security, cheating, and logistical inefficiencies. With the increasing reliance on online learning and remote education, particularly post-pandemic, the need for robust digital examination proctoring systems has become even more evident.

AI-based digital proctoring is gaining traction as a solution to the limitations of manual supervision. These systems use artificial intelligence algorithms to monitor and detect suspicious behaviors during exams, such as unauthorized access to materials, cheating, or impersonation. In Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, the current examination system, which relies heavily on in-person supervision, is prone to human error and is not scalable for online or large-scale assessments. This research investigates the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing an AI-based digital proctoring system to enhance examination integrity and security.

Statement of the Problem

At Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, traditional examination proctoring methods have proven ineffective in addressing the rising concerns about cheating and academic dishonesty, particularly with the shift towards remote learning. Despite the efforts to secure examinations, the lack of a reliable automated solution increases the vulnerability of the examination process. AI-based digital proctoring has shown promise globally in addressing these issues; however, its implementation in the context of the university has not been thoroughly explored. The study seeks to examine the potential benefits, challenges, and effectiveness of AI-based proctoring systems for ensuring the integrity of examinations in the university.

Objectives of the Study

1. To design and implement an AI-based digital examination proctoring system at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

2. To assess the effectiveness of the AI-based system in identifying cheating behaviors and maintaining exam integrity.

3. To evaluate the challenges and opportunities of implementing AI-based proctoring in higher education institutions.

Research Questions

1. How effective is the AI-based digital examination proctoring system in detecting cheating and maintaining examination integrity at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi?

2. What are the students' perceptions and acceptance levels regarding AI-based digital proctoring?

3. What challenges do administrators face in implementing and maintaining an AI-based examination proctoring system?

Research Hypotheses

1. The AI-based digital proctoring system significantly improves the detection of cheating and dishonest behaviors during examinations compared to traditional methods.

2. Students are generally open to the use of AI-based proctoring systems for online examinations.

3. The implementation of the AI-based proctoring system faces challenges related to technology infrastructure, privacy concerns, and system adoption.

Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to improving the examination integrity at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University by providing a more reliable and scalable AI-based digital proctoring solution. It will also inform other institutions looking to adopt similar technologies for remote examinations and ensure academic honesty.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of an AI-based digital examination proctoring system at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. Limitations include the university’s existing technological infrastructure, resistance from students and faculty, and potential challenges in ensuring privacy during proctored exams.

Definitions of Terms

• AI-Based Digital Proctoring: The use of artificial intelligence to monitor and assess students' behavior during digital exams, detecting instances of cheating or dishonesty.

• Examination Integrity: Ensuring that exams are conducted in a fair and honest manner, free from cheating or unauthorized assistance.

• Proctoring: The act of overseeing and supervising students during an exam to ensure that they follow examination rules and regulations.
